Vodacom and Starlink Partner to Bridge Africa’s Digital Divide
Vodacom has teamed up with Starlink to accelerate rural connectivity across Africa, leveraging satellite internet to overcome infrastructure limitations. The collaboration marks the first major integration of a mobile network with SpaceX's satellite service on the continent, currently operational in 25 African markets.
Regulatory hurdles loom in South Africa, where Starlink circumvents ownership rules by partnering with Vodacom rather than establishing direct infrastructure. The government is considering telecom law reforms that could allow equity targets to be met through community investments—a model previously adopted by automotive manufacturers.
Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub emphasized that deployment timelines depend on licensing approvals, with initial rollouts targeting markets where Starlink already operates. The partnership underscores the race to close Africa's connectivity gap through hybrid terrestrial-satellite solutions.
